“The shoes make a man“. This saying always comes to my mind, when I wear white sneakers for some time and they look like 10 years old, although I bought them 6 months ago. It takes some maintenance, if you want them to look like brand new. I will give some tips now:
The washing machine is the enemy here. I know it sound weird, but if you do not have to put them in washing machine please do not put them in there. And also do not put them in tumble dryer to increase the damage on them. If you have to put them in washing machine, use very low heat and let them dry
Now get some warm soapy water and invest in 3 important tools. A hard brush, a soft brush, and a soft cloth. Use the hard brush for leather and hard parts. Soft brush for soft parts (like suede or canvas) and work the water into the fabric in circular motions, repeating for deeper stains, then use the soft cloth to wipe
Now that you have your sneakers white as snow, focus on laces. Remove them from shoe and wash them separately in soapy water. You can use hairdryer to dry them. If they are too much damaged for cleaning, do not be afraid to buy new ones
When you buy your sneakers, try to keep the box and do not throw it in garbage. Store shoes in that box to avoid dust and also buy weather protection spray. Prevention is the key word here.
And last advice is to wear socks all the time. I know it looks great going out in sneakers without socks, but it has so many drawbacks. You will be sweating directly into the fabric of your shoe and that will cause discolour, not to mention the smell. Invest into white ankle socks. The trick here is to appear sockless.
Many of us wear white sneakers these days as a great accessories that we use to underline our style in dressing. They can basically be used almost for anything in our wardrobe, but there is this one big “but”. They usually stay white only few days after we take them out of their box. There are not many things that goes so fast from looking fresh and new to looking kind of used a lot.
If you want to keep your white sneakers in “fresh and new” mode, you have to be prepared that these sneakers require some serious maintenance.
Here are few tips how to take care about your white sneakers:
Washing machine is the enemy. Well you may think if you put sneakers in washing machine, they will come out clean and white, but that is not so true. Washing machine will damage the stitching and discolor the rubber. If you have to put them in washing machine anyway, use very low heat and do not use tumble dryer at all. Let them dry But still the point is don’t put them in washing machine, if you do not have to.
Now you need 3 things. A hard brush, a soft brush, and a soft cloth. And of course warm soapy water. Use hard brush on hard parts of the sneaker like leather. The soft brush is used on suede or canvas. Work the water into the fabric in circular motions, repeating for deeper stains, then use the soft cloth to wipe It is recommended to do this activity as often as you can. Once per month will not bring same results as once per week obviously.
Do not forgot about laces. First thing you want to do is to remove them and wash them in soapy water. You can use hairdryer to dry them. If they are damaged or cannot be cleaned properly, don’t hesitate and buy new ones.
Now let’s talk a little about prevention. Keep the box and store sneakers in it. This will help against the dust and also do not be afraid to buy some weather protection spray. Apply the protection spray before you wear them out for the first time. Prevention is the key word here.
Wear socks. If you want to look, like you are not wearing any socks, just buy some white ankle socks and wear them. It is not good to go sockless in summer, because the sweat will go directly into the fabrics of your shoe and this will discolor them. Not to mention they will begin to smell bad.
